Ergonomics
First off, you need a suitable environment in which to game. This means a chair and desk setup that is comfortable, but not ‘too’ comfortable in a couch or bed type of way. Heights and elbow/arm ergonomics are essential to keep the blood flowing and help reduce strain on your spine (and eyes). If you are console gaming your couch will do, as long as you don’t recline too far.

Keep the blood flowing
A study by the University of Georgia in the USA found that sleep-deprived adults who walked up and down stairs for 10 minutes felt more energised than those who remained inactive. Make time for tactical ‘walking’ breaks, even if that means just pacing up and down the room. Exercise is also a proven motivator - meaning you’ll play better after a quick walk and stretch.
Fresh Air
Ideally you want some fresh air to circulate through the room. Or at least step outside periodically (if you can) to deeply breath in some fresh air. We usually associate deep breathing with relaxation techniques, but the increased oxygen flow actually helps the brain work better. Rooms where there are a lack of air also lead to yawning - you know what we mean.
Regulate room temperature
It’s simple: Warmth makes us feel like cozying up, while a slight chill exposure to colder is reinvigorating. If you need a quick ‘wake-up’ go with the tried-and-tested technique of splashing cold water on your face.
Music
Fast and loud. Not too loud to annoy the neighbours in dreamland but while music can soothe the savage beast it can also amp the snail to go racing.
Red Bull & water mix
Staying fully hydrated can help keep the body working optimally. Combine this with the revitalising benefits of Red Bull with a 50/50 mix of Red Bull energy drink and water in a sports water bottle and you’re good to go.
Fuel
Almost as important as hydration is fuel for your body and mind. Food helps regulate blood sugar which combats those ‘dips’ you might get in the early hours. Eating protein can give you more energy, but stay away from carbohydrates and fats. Biltong for the win then!
